Fairview Southdale Hospital’s new Emergency Center in Edina has officially opened its doors after undergoing a $41 million expansion, and provides a perfect example of the utilization of different Dri-Design metals and finishes to create incredible, one-of-a-kind projects. Dri-Design is a dry joint architectural metal wall panel system that performs better than any other panel on the market, per the AMA 508-07 rain-screen test. These natural and recyclable metal panels install quickly and stand the test of time. On this project, HGA Architects were attracted to the performance characteristics of the Dri-Design panel system, but also wanted to create a design statement. Dri-Design was able to source color paint technology from PPG Industries, Inc, creating a custom panel that would achieve these goals. Knutson Construction and HGA Architects worked with subcontractor MG McGrath, specializing in architectural sheet metal installation and fabrication, to install 18,000 square feet of Dri-Design paneling to the exterior of the building. Varying from three different sizes, the panels are West Pewter Mica and English Garden in color, with a Kynar finish. The English Garden panels display a dramatic shift in color changing from a green to a bluish purple as the viewing angle changes, providing a dynamic look and creating a unique design statement for the exterior of the building. In future phases of the renovation, the building owner plans to extend the material to cover more of the building’s exterior
